The Speakers Constituency

As everyone in politics seems to be saying, it is time for change.
Due to boundary changes, the Speaker of the Commons became my sitting MP and I was effectively dis-enfranchised in the recent General Election.

Although the Speaker is supposedly an Independent MP, tradition dictates that non of the other main political parties put up candidates. As the Speaker tends to hold a safe "party" seat, a true Independent candidate has difficulty winning the seat; as evidenced recently by Buckingham and John Bercow.

In my view, when elected, the Speaker should preside for a fix term i.e. the life of a parliament, resigning his or her seat and, with a by-election, allow proper representation for the constituency. The Speaker should then seek re-election at the next General Election, as either an Independent or party candidate.

Currently the Speaker has a "job for life" and the position taken by the main political parties shows contempt for the electorate.

Didn't the Speaker have to defend his seat this time round?

The Speaker did indeed need to defend his seat - against Farage, the UKIP leader. Somewhat unsporting of UKIP, really...
