Ann Marie Houghton The Youngest Independent Councillor in the UK
Ann Marie Houghton born on 13th March 1993 has been elected to the Parish Council in Leegomery, Telford and Wrekin.
Ann Marie is without a doubt the youngest candidate to have stood in the 2011 local elections in Telford and Wrekin and is believed to be the youngest candidate ever to have stood and be elected in the History of Telford & Wrekin.
We believe that Ann Marie is in fact the youngest elected member in the UK.

As an 18 year old I have stood in my first election and I am potentially the youngest candidate to have stood in the history of Telford and Wrekin.
I am a full time student at TCAT, have applied to be retained fire fighter, I hold down a part time job, have boxed as an amateur and I am proud to be a young carer for my disabled mother. Whilst I am young, I have acheived alot and believe I will be a credible role model for other young people in our community.
I have the greatest respect for our senior citizens and wish to bridge the gap between the youngest in our community and our senior community members.
I will represent my community with full vigour and enthusiasm.

I am extremely proud of Ann Marie and the campaign she ran. Half way through her campaign she was hospitalised, had to be operated on but still fought for her place on the Parish Council and was successful.
I am also proud of every one who voted for Ann Marie. Despite being only 18 years of age, the voters in our ward did not see this as a barrier, but in fact saw it as a major plus.
I hope her success and the fact that she is the youngest elected member in the UK, will inspire other young people to stand for election and represent their community in the future.

This should be an example for all the rest of the councillors that should see the great job she has done. I am sure that being this young has it's disadvantages as well, but, the most important thing is that she had the courage to run as councillor and try to do something for this country. The law that we must respect is very important and I am truly sad that it never gets solved as it should. When I was in the States for example, I had to get an attorney, because, otherwise, being an English citizen brought me trouble.
But, I think that for her, at this point a teaching certificate would be a great idea for her candidacy in the future.
